In April 2003 I coordinated a support group for military mothers in the town I live in (Taylorsville, Ky.). We are a small group, but these were mothers whose sons are only 18 through 21 and had enlisted and about to be deployed to Iraq. These mothers knew me and that I had been through this before. They basically turned to me for help and support. Our projects have been sending out cards to our troops from our town, sending out pictures and letters written by some of our 1st and 2nd graders in our elementary school, making and selling beaded safety pin flags and beaded safety pin yellow ribbons to make money for our projects and on April 18th we are hosting a guest speaker, a Chief Master Sgt. from the Air National Guard, who lives in our town and has just returned from an 8 month deployment in Iraq. We have made a scrapbook with pictures and info about our children in the military and we keep a binder with emails, letters and info pertaining to the military, war, poems, prayers, etc. The living room of my home is like a red, white and blue patriotic museum. Friends and family have provided me with all sorts of patriotic items which I proudly display. I have worn my flag pins (Oh, and I also have made around 50 plastic canvas needlepoint eagle pins and around 30 plastic canvas flag pins) which I freely give out to anyone who asks for one) anyway, I was saying, I have worn my flag pins everyday for the past three years and will continue to do so from now on. My way of showing my love and support and also to remind others, "Hey, remember our troops". I pretty much know everyone in this little town and they know I don't have a problem of verbally speaking up for our troops and reminding them our troops are still scattered around overseas and need to know we care.
