Army Launches Virtual Gateway for Tuition Assistance

The Army Continuing Education System launched its new GoArmyEd portal for tuition assistance (TA) at: http://www.GoArmyEd.com. This virtual gateway provides a one-stop location for Soldiers to process tuition assistance and sign up for college courses 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Previously, Soldiers had to go to an Education Center to enroll in classes and process TA applications. GoArmyEd also has other education financial assistance opportunities listed and is now the portal for EArmyU, an online education program offering more than 145 degree and certificate programs.

DECA Scholarship

The Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) announced that the application process for its Scholarships for Military Children program has now begun for 2007. Applications for the $1,500 scholarships are available at 264 commissaries worldwide, or can be downloaded through links at http://www.commissaries.com/, http://www.militaryscholar.org/, or http://www.dodea.edu/. The program is administered by the Fisher House Foundation. A significant number of scholarships, about 10 percent every year, go to high school students at DoD schools overseas. The program is open to unmarried children under the age of 21 (23 if enrolled in school) of military active-duty, Reserve, Guard, and retired personnel. Eligibility will be determined using the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System database. Applicants should ensure that they, as well as their sponsor, are enrolled in the DEERS database and have a current ID card. The applicant must be planning to attend, or already attending, an accredited college, or university full-time in the fall term of 2007, or enrolled in a program of studies designed to transfer directly into a four-year program. Applications for 2007, which includes an essay on "how and why" the applicant would change an historical event, must be turned in at a commissary by close of business on February 21, 2007. At least one $1,500 scholarship will be awarded at every commissary location with qualified applicants.

GI Bill

Those who have not used their GI Bill benefits may be intimidated by the application process.  Actually, the process only involves four steps.  Step 1:  Apply to a college or university that is approved for VA training or education.  Step 2:  Complete VA Form 22-1990, Application for Education Benefits, which should be available in your school's registrar's office.  Step 3:  If you have not chosen a school yet, apply for your VA Eligibility Determination by mailing your completed VA Form 22-1990 to your VA Regional Office.  Step 4:  Once you have begun to receive your benefit checks, you will have to complete the VA's Web Automated Verification of Eligibility (WAVE) each month to continue to receive your monthly benefits payments.  For a detailed description of the process, read "The GI Bill Application Process" at Military.com, by visiting:  http://www.Military.com/Education/Content.  To learn about GI Bill benefits and military-friendly schools, request free information at:  http://edu.military.com/education/gi_bill/index.jsp.

GI Bill Top-Up Program

The VA's Top-Up Program allows VA to pay the remaining balance after the military tuition assistance benefit has been paid. The Top-Up payment equals the cost of a college course minus the amount of tuition assistance paid by the military for the course. There are specific eligibility requirements which may be found here.
